Searching for keys, a wallet or a phone just as you need to leave is stressful, and it happens to lots of people. One idea some people like is giving these things a single home base.

Choose a home base

Pick one spot near the door you use most, like a bowl, a hook or a small shelf. Make it easy to reach and easy to see.

Put things back as you walk in

The home base helps most when items go there straight away. Example: you come in, drop keys in the bowl, put your phone on its charger next to it, and then take your coat off.

A quick leaving check

  • Some people say a short phrase like 'phone, keys, wallet' at the door.
  • A small note on the inside of the door can act as a reminder.
  • Keep a spare item in your bag, like a charger or bank card holder, so it rarely leaves.

Make it hard to forget

  • A bright keyring or phone case is easier to spot.
  • Some people use a tracking tag on their keys or bag.
  • Charge your phone at the home base so it ends up in the right place overnight.

When things still go missing

Habits take time and you will still lose things sometimes. Looking at the home base first, then retracing your steps calmly, is often enough.
